End of story.

The only time I ever run this picture of the final edition of the Nashville Banner, printed 10 years ago last week, is when something comes to a close here in North Highland Park.

I ran the picture when the fall semester came to a close back in December and also when the search for the random hottie ended the day after my birthday.

Barring whatever happens on Saturday afternoon, Crichton will play its final home game of the 2007-08 season against Freed-Hardeman before what will be a raucous crowd at Streets Ministries Arena.

It will be the final home game for some of the characters you read about in my columns on sports here in North Highland Park, characters like Gracie Walker, Derek Boykin, Michelle Williams, Sapp, Sly, Stan, and Bo: people who I have grown to call family since I’ve been here.

For a lot of people, the final home game will be a mixture of sadness and celebration.

Sadness because these guys have been here for four years and have accomplished everything they could possibly could here in North Highland Park.

Celebration because these guys were architects of what could very well be a powerhouse in the TransSouth for years to come and how their run to the Elite 8 in the NAIA Tournament last season will be talked about for years to come.

Because these guys have overcome the odds and came out on top.

I certainly believe that the graduating senior basketball players and Danstar members will be success stories in life. I believe honestly that they will make their parents proud as well as the Crichton family.

But for a minute let’s celebrate their successes and what is to come from them in the future.

Short time at #1?

Tonight, Vanderbilt will square off against Tennessee in historic Memorial Gym to have a chance to not only inch closer to having the most wins by a Vanderbilt squad ever, but also knock off a #1 for the second year in a row, something that has never happened before in Vanderbilt’s storied history.

Tennessee, on the other hand, has a chance to continue on their historic march to the school’s first outright SEC championship in 41 years as they enter tonight’s game with the highest ranking in 100 years of men’s basketball after beating Memphis on Saturday.

For Tennessee, the narrow victory over the Tigers was a chance to show the nation that they were indeed for real as far as going for a number-one seed was concerned. With very little rest, the Vols have to go into a rowdy atmosphere at Memorial Gym to continue what has been already a dream season in Knoxville.

Should J.P. Prince, Chris Lofton, who didn’t do as well as I expected in Saturday’s game against Memphis, do well against the press defense of Vanderbilt, expect them to remain at the top for another week in the polls.

Allow Vanderbilt to come out the gates running, then there could be some problems for Bruce Pearl and company.

Final score: Tennessee 65 Vanderbilt 52

Batesville/McKensie pictures

Just uploaded these pictures a few minutes ago:

Bethel College cheerleaders. And they say Christian schools don’t have hot chicks.

Crichton warming up before game with Lyon College. Wonder why that didn’t translate into a win.

Action between Lyon and Central Baptist. I was sitting right behind Central Baptist’s bench.

Some shawties during halftime. They were too crunk during the game last night.

Puking? More like choking

Growing up, I always thought that Tennessee fans were the most self-righteous, uppity-assed fanbase around.

Outside of Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, and maybe Todd Helton, even though I dislkie his racist father and younger brother because of that shot he made here in Memphis last month, the University of Tennessee embodied everything that was wrong with the state of Tennessee.

They felt that because they were in Knoxville, they didn’t have to answer to the rest of the world, basically a world that indoor plumbing and legit marriages.

That their football team was handpicked by God to win the SEC year in and year out.

Men’s basketball was a joke.

Even when they brought it back to respectabilty, Tennessee was still a joke in men’s basketball.

The year they won a share of the SEC title, they were put on in the second round.

Two years ago when they won the SEC East, they were bounced by Wichita State in the second round.

And then, when it seemed like choking in basketball wasn’t enough, Tennessee blows a huge first-half lead and gets bounced in the Sweet 16 by Ohio State, which would have given Memphis a chance to play Tennessee for a chance to head to the Final Four.

Saturday, Tennessee will head into Memphis with the highest ranking in school history, looking for something positive to add to their long tradition of basketball excellence.

That is if they don’t choke away the opportunity.

About Southern Girls and Sports

Southern Girls and Sports is a look at not only sports here in the South, but also a place where I can write about my adventures around the South and also about my second love:hot chicks. I don't try to be a journalist, I tried to be one for three years but didn't work out because my editor was a shithead. I try to be one of the guys you see stumbling across Poplar Avenue at 6 in the morning drunk or better than yet, a guy that loves sports. You can also read some of my intelligent work on The Nasty Boys' Sports Blog and other places around the internet.
