Some people are not cut out for leadership

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

One interesting that happened on the day that I won a seat on the Student Senate in North Highland Park was the reaction, thanks in part to my roommate’s observation, of one of the candidates for student body president.

After believing that they won, they were shocked that my then-neighbor won the election instead of them, leaving them with the proverbial egg on their face.

Weird, huh?

You think for one minute you have the chance to replace one of the most popular students to ever set foot in North Highland Park and then you get sideswiped by someone who was more capable of leading the school in the right direction for the next school year.

There are some people in this world, like it or not, that are incapable of leading a dog through the walking trails near my former residence in Springdale-Hein Park.

And with me being a student assistant coach for basketball, I’ve started to see that line between competent leaders and incompetent ones four days into the new school year.

I always felt like if a person was a senior in college, then it was their place to be a good example for the incoming freshman.

You know, be like a mentor to the rookies.

But in some cases, it doesn’t turn out that way.

My roommate is going to kill me for this

On my phone I have O.A.R’s “This Town” as my ringtone, the theme song from this year’s College World Series and the thorn in my roommate’s side everytime I receive a text message.

Since the song can’t get out of my head and it’s the weekend, I decided to throw up the video on here and call it a day.

1,000 friends by the summer’s end?

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Normally during summer vacation, I make some dumb goal up to acheive.

One year it was to hit three homers in both ends of a doubleheader, which I did the summer before I graduated from high school in my old neighborhood.

Another one was to talk to at least one girl from each of Tennessee’s Grand Divisions, which I did in 2005 while working as a counselor for kids.

But this year I’m trying to do something that seems to be impossible, reach 1,000 friends on Myspace and 600 on Facebook before August 18th, which is when I return to school.

Since I’m not on Myspace as much as I am on Facebook, I think by the final full week of summer vacation I could actually be one of the few people here in town that has 1,000 friends on Myspace and 600 on Facebook.

But then again, I have to be more active on both sites in order to do that, which I’m not.

“All that matters is that you had a good time”

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

A week from tomorrow, I will make the journey from peaceful Chicksaw Gardens and back to the rowdiness of my Springdale neighborhood, which is where unfortunately, I lived at until moving to Chickasaw Gardens at the beginning of the year for the summer.

While most of my friends have already packed up and said their last goodbyes this weekend, I decided to stay until the checkout date, which ironically, would be Memorial Day.

The reason for me staying until the end was because for the last five months, basically this entire year in North Highland Park, has been a wonderful experience for me.

Of course, just like any experience, there’s been triumph and tragedy.

Triumph was watching the softball team make a nice run in the TransSouth Conference tournament.

Tragedy was seeing one of my friends’ injured up close and personal in Nashville and then fighting so hard to keep the basketball season going in North Highland Park.

The reality of what was to happen after Friday was when I went to Senses, which is across the parking lot from my apartment.

During a singalong of “Let’s Stay Together”, I found myself tearing up while singing off-key with my friends, knowing that this was to be our last time together for a minute.

While I know for a fact that we’ll be at it again in August, however expensive it may be to go to Crichton, I know for a fact the remaining year and a half I have in North Highland Park will never be anything like this.

Who would have thought that in a span of twenty-four hours I would get my crush’s number and then on the final day of the semester, finally beat one of the best pool players in North Highland Park?

Who would have thunk it?

Whatever opportunities may come in 2008-09, as I make the transition to junior, I wanted to give one more toast to 2007-08.

And now that these acts been written, it’s time to enjoy my summer.

Just a little slow down here, folks

With two weeks to go before Valentine’s and a full month left in the regular season, I’ve been moving at the speed of light.

Because I don’t have internet access to my new apartment, I’ve been posting entries from the school library, which will be until tomorrow when I get my wireless internet card from a good friend of mine after I come back from Jackson, Tennessee. That way you, the reader will be exposed to more raunch and more hotties without being bombarded with Scriptures by religious zealots.

However, you can read my latest column on TNB that was run on Thursday morning about Crichton’s game at Union. I plan to write a second column on the trip to Jackson for Monday’s edition and take it from there.

Have to run, folks.
